What Is Podcasting?

Podcasting is the act of publishing audio files to a website (strictly speaking, a weblog/ blog). The term podcast is used to refer to both a weblog with frequently-published audio content, as well as the audio content itself.

While there is no strict rule about the frequency of publishing podcast content, the implication is that there is some consistent timeframe. The most popular podcasts seem to be publishing daily, or near-daily. There are others that offer a weekly podcast summary. Still others just provide a bit of audio supplement to a mostly-text weblog.

The general rule of thumb is that if you want to build regular visitors for your podcasts, you want to publish frequently - just like you would for your weblog. However, it is better to publish less frequently and have good, interesting content than to publish daily crap. Obvious, but often overlooked.

Aside from some regular publishing frequency, a website isn’t typically considered to be a podcast unless it is distributed via web feeds. Since weblogs normally offer content syndication via RSS or Atom web feeds, you’ll find that most podcasts live on weblogs (blogs). Blogging platforms generally make it easier to podcast, as there will often be a plugin which aids in the publishing of audio content.

But given the type of reader that I am expecting for this site, it’s probably unlikely that any of you plan to do any of this, at least initially. […]
