What Is A Tag Cloud?

Tag clouds are a new form of website navigation typically associated with weblogs. The name “tag cloud” is given because most such navigational aids display relevant keywords in a cluster that loosely resembles a cloud.

There are several types of tag clouds, but the gist is that tag clouds consist of keywords relevant to a website. The more often the keyword occurs on pages of the site, the larger the font size of that keyword in the tag cloud. The effect is a reader’s eye is drawn to those keywords in the cloud that are larger.

In some discussions about tag clouds that I’ve seen in the blogosphere, it’s clear that not everyone likes tag clouds or feels that they are relevant. Because they are a fairly new concept and thus not always intuitive, it’s recommended that you use them only websites and weblogs where readers are expected to have a bit of technical knowledge.
