Municipal Wi-Fi Creates Tech Investing Opps

Many cities and towns in North America have or are moving towards setting up citywide Wi-Fi. Some are evening offering said Wi-Fi for free - commonly referred to as municipal Wi-Fi. A New York times article claims that as many as 300 cities and towns have already done this. Universities are also moving towards being wireless. Those that were already offering limited wireless access to the Internet on campus are now moving towards complete campus-wide access with redundancy to remove “dead spots”.

The result of this is that some general stock investment opportunties are arising. I’ve written more about it at World Wealth View.

As an aside, has anyone realized that the move to citywide Wi-Fi opens up the possibility of cities earning revenues offering VoIP service? I’m serious. Cities could subsidize municipal Wi-Fi with monthly flat rates for calling via the Internet, maybe strike up a deal with a few VoIP phone manufacturers. And if they do, that opens up even more investment possibilities. Telcos must be very, very scared right now.
