3 Networks Unveils X-Series Mobile Web

The day is not far when you will be enjoying broadband Internet access on your mobile handset. Amidst the mobile web initiatives and mobile web best practices from W3C, high-speed mobile web is going to become a reality very soon.

Hutchison Whampoa’s 3 Networks have announced the release of X-Series, an innovative technology that would allow broadband Internet access via mobile handsets.

3 Networks are expected to provide this service on a flat rate plan, the details of which is yet to be unveiled. 3 Networks has partnered with Skype, eBay, Sling Media, Yahoo, Google, Sony Ericsson and Nokia to provide several add-ons to the mobile web. X-Series will be released in December 2007 in UK and made available initially on Nokia’s N73 and Sony Ericsson’s W950i.

The pros of X-series:

  • Unlimited calling via Skype from your mobile handset is expected to attract a lot of customers in a short stint of time.
  • With X-Series, you can get rid of the existing volume-based and time-based plans of the existing broadband Internet access.
  • Pay a flat rate and enjoy unlimited access to the web with innumerous add-ons with the mobile web from ‘3 Networks’.
  • With X-Series, You can chat via Yahoo and MSN, Place bids in eBay, Access your home PC via Orb,Watch your favourite TV channel via Sling and do lots more based on the tariff plan you choose.

The cons:

  • Skype traffic due to unlimited calling is expected to rise inexplicably. Continued superior performance of Skype calls with X-Series is still unambiguous.
  • Only the X-Series customer could tell whether all the services as enlisted by 3 is made available on the mobile web.
  • The conditions behind “flat-rate based on fair use policy” are yet to be unveiled by 3 Networks.
