Cranky.com - Search Engine Targets Older Searchers

With MySpace, Facebook and other social networking sites, the entire web seems to be capturing the pulse of the younger generation. Where would the NOT so younger people go and find information that relates to them? That’s the question seems to be bothering Jeff Taylor, the man behind Monster.com and he got an answer. Its cRANKy.com.

As cranky as it sounds, the entire idea seems to be cranky as well. At least to me.

OK. First some background. Cranky is a search engine similar to Google, Yahoo etc but targeted towards processing the content from websites which are maintained by people above the age of 50. The company identified top 5000 websites which are targeted towards this group and processing them for search results.

Now, you know what that means. Less results. That’s right. With Google indexing 8 billions pages the last time I checked, what kind of results can you expect from 5000 sites. I don’t think you would get relevant results from this smaller dataset.

If these users who were above 50 can find the information from cranky.com, I am sure they can find relevant information using Google or Yahoo. Its pretty early stages and we need to look which direction cranky will sway in the future.
