Three Reasons Not To Upgrade To Vista

[rant ahead] PC World has a piece called Vista: 15 reasons to switch. It’s linkbait if I ever saw it. So let me take the bait and fan the flames a little with my own list about why NOT to get Vista.

  1. It’s from Microsoft.
  2. It’s from Microsoft. And it’s brand new. Remember the bugs in Win 98 and XP when they first came out? If you’re going to get it, wait a while.
  3. Steve Ballmer thinks it’s incredible. Remember his insane blow out on stage somewhere? Didn’t a Democratic Presidential candidate in the last election campaign get told he should “calm down” when he showed his passion? At least he wasn’t screaming and raving and frothing at the mouth and dancing around like a lunatic like Ballmer was. This man is in charge of Microsoft?

Okay, my list is lame, but I’m not going to even address the 15 reasons Preston Gralla gave at PC World because they’re utterly non-groundbreaking. Come on. Is that all you’ve got, Vista? I thumb my nose at you. Your mother was Windows XP and your father was??? Do you even know? It might be Mac OS X or Linux but doesn’t come close.

I dread when I have to buy my next PC. In fact, I’ve contemplated rushing out right now, before Vista is released, and buying a PC without it. I still plan to buy a Mac this year, but because they’re always so much more expensive, I have to wait a bit longer. I do have Linux and cygwin installed on a couple of computers, but because I have to test Windows-based software, I’ll likely end up with Vista eventually. Though I don’t have to like it.
