HP Releases VOIP SmartPhone at 3GSM

HP Released their new VOIP SmartPhone the iPaq 500 Series Voice Messenger.  Its actually a quad band phone with integrated WiFi (b/g with WPA2 Security).  It allows users to talk on their cell phone plan or switch to a VOIP option while at home, in the office or in a hotspot’s range.

The Device is running the new new Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.0 OS.  It weighs in at 3.6 oz’s and is about twice as thick as a Motorola Slivr.

Remote IT Management of Smart Phone

This is the first device to utilize iPaq’s newly acquired technology of over-the-air device management.  This capability allows IT managers to deploy security updates, provide access to applications or even data remotely.

The device will not be available until this spring so this is truly just the official launch announcement to sign up carriers and retailers to carry the device next summer.  As the phone is quad band it will work on most networks around the globe.

Not an iPod Killer

This phone is made for business and is not intended to be an iPod killer all though it does play music and videos and actually has raised keys that you can feel and touch.

The Twisted View - HP v Apple Trademark Battle

Its probably fortunate for Apple that HP has had too many of their own scandals this year to focus on the possible trademark infringement by Apple with the name iPod on a a mobile device.  iPaq is very very similar.  Now don’t get me wrong, if Apple can litigate at the drop of the hat over the use of the three letter word ‘Pod‘ then maybe HP a two letter company could go after ownership of a portion of their trademarked name the iPaq.
