Dialup Has Me by the . . . Cord
I am being held captive by my dialup internet service. Yesterday, I downloaded one security upgrade – it took five hours. At one time, it was downloading at the break-neck speed of ZERO kb per second. Apparently my download is as slow as it gets.
Try DSL you may be thinking to yourself, and I would if it were an option. Unfortunately, I live in the woods. There is no one around for a mile or more in every direction. This means that the powers that be won’t place one of their magic switch boxes close enough to my house to get a DSL signal.
There’s cable. I know that is your second thought. Cable is usually even faster than DSL. The down side for me is that I would have to personally pay to run hard wire all the way to my house – which is a long way. At $3 per foot, I won’t ever be able to justify that expense. My kids would much rather go to the beach.
The finally possibility for high speed internet is satellite. The initial cost won’t be as much as the cable option, but the monthly fees will be way more than I pay now (compare $10 to $100). Even then, all the reviews I’ve been able to find online don’t sing the praises of satellite internet.
For the moment, I’ll practice my patience and live with the dialup service. Who knows, with the way technology is expanding, maybe there is a solution for me somewhere on the horizon.
