Google and GrandCentral

Google is plunging into the Web 2.0 world with the acquisition of GrandCentral Communications, a VoIP platform. GrandCentral was developed with the goal to bring technology to the hands of the consumer and make it easy to use.

At its basic, GrandCentral is a forwarding system. When someone calls your number, all the phones you have listed in your account will ring. The service will also offer the ability to check voicemails, block callers, and record calls.

GrandCentral was founded by Craig Walker and Vincent Paquet to be a new kind of communications company. This is the same team that created the VoIP service DialPad that was sold to Yahoo in 2005.

Google is continuing to beta test the service and will offer a limited sign up for new users, at least for now. It will continue to service existing GrandCentral customers without interruption.
